Types Of Long Term Memory Flashcards
what are the 3 different types of LTM
- procedural
- semantic
- episodic
what is procedural memory
responsible for knowing how to do things
eg, how to ride a bicycle
what is semantic memory
responsible for storing information about the world
eg, London is the capital of England
what is episodic memory
responsible for storing informaion about events
eg, where we spent new years eve last year
which types of LTM are declarative
semantic and episodic
explain the study that provide evidence for different types of LTM
tulving et al
- tulving injected radioactive gold into his own blood stream
- he then thought about semantic memories and episodic memories
- scanners monitered the blood flow
- episodic memories increased blood flow in the front of the brain
- semantic memories increased blood flow towards the back of the brain
what is the case study that supports the idea of different types of LTM
clive wearing
explain how clive wearing supports the idea of different LTM stores
- sufferes from amnesia
- he can still play the piano brilliantly but cant remember his musical education
strength
give a PEELH on the types of LTM
study
- P - supporting evidence from lab studies
- Eg - tulving et al concudted an experiment where he injected himself with radioactive gold and then scanned his blood flow while thinking asbout either semantic or episodic memories. he found blood flow increased to the front of the brain when thinking about episodic but increased to the back of the brain when thinking abgouit semnatic
- Ex - this diffferentiation in brain activity suggests episodic and semantic memories are processed in different brain regions. the use od neuroimigaijng technology provides strong empirical evidence
- L - therefore, this strengthens the theory of seperate LTm stores, increasing tghe validity
- H - this study is based on a small sample size and lacks ecological validity as it uses an artifical task in a controlled setting
strength
give a PEELH on the types of LTM
case study
- P - supoortinmg evidence from case studies l
- Eg - clive wearings case study where he could play the piano perfectly (procedural) but had no memory of his musical education (episodic)
- Ex- highligts that the two different types of long term mmeory are processed in different areas of the brain
- L - increases the validoity as it is supported by real life evidence
- H - the use of a case study may lack generalisability as it is an extreme case
