Unit 2.3: Introduction to Memory Flashcards
(33 cards)
Memory
Information that persists over time, acquired through experiences, and can be stored and retrieved.
Metacognition
Awareness of one’s own cognitive processes.
Explicit Memory
Memory that involves conscious recall and effort.
Episodic Memory
Subtype of explicit memory involving personal experiences or events.
Semantic Memory
Subtype of explicit memory involving facts, knowledge, and general information.
Implicit Memory
Memory formed without conscious awareness, often automatic.
Procedural Memory
A type of implicit memory involving motor skills and tasks.
Prospective Memory
Remembering to perform actions in the future.
Recall
Retrieving information from memory without cues.
Recognition
Identifying previously learned information when presented with it.
Relearning
Measuring how quickly information is learned again after being forgotten.
Parallel Processing
Brain’s ability to process multiple types of information at once.
Long-Term Potentiation (LTP)
Strengthening of synaptic connections through repeated activation, supporting learning and memory.
Working Memory
Another term for short-term memory; temporarily holds and processes information for cognitive tasks.
Visuospatial Sketchpad
Part of working memory that handles visual and spatial information (the “inner eye”).
Phonological Loop
Part of working memory that processes verbal and auditory information.
Phonological Store
Subcomponent of phonological loop that briefly holds spoken words/sounds (the “inner ear”).
Articulatory Rehearsal Process
Subcomponent that allows rehearsal of verbal information (the “inner voice”).
Central Executive
Component of working memory that manages attention and coordinates other components.
Episodic Buffer
Temporary store that integrates information from other components and long-term memory.
Multi-Store Model of Memory
Explains memory in three stages: sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory.
Stimulus
Any sensory input such as a sight or sound.
Sensory Memory
Initial, brief storage of sensory information.
Iconic Memory
Visual sensory memory lasting a fraction of a second.
