Q

Characteristics of life (6)

A
  1. Be composed of one (unicellular) or more cells (multicellular).
  2. Capable of growth (development, and becoming larger)
  3. Be capable of reproduction (producing offspring).
  4. Demonstrate the ability to respond to outside stimuli.
  5. As a population, be able to adapt to the environment and evolve
  6. Have a metabolism, meaning both consume energy and produce waste.

4
Q
  1. Be capable of reproduction (producing offspring).
A
  • Reproduction can be:
Sexual = 2 parents produce genetically unique offspring together

Asexual = 1 parent produces genetically identical offspring

Q
  1. Demonstrate the ability to respond to outside stimuli
A

Stimulus = a change in an organism’s environment
 (cause)

Response = how an organism reacts to a change in
 its environment (effect)

population

A

multiple organisms of the same species living together
- eg. all the goats in a field

Q

community

A

multiple populations of different species living together

  • All the goats birds plants insects squirrels, etc. living in a field

Q

ecosystem

A

community PLUS all of the abiotic factors in the environment.

  • Ex. All of the goats, birds, plants, insects, squirrels, etc. in a field AND the temperature, precipitation, etc.

Q

Biome

A

multiple ecosystems that share similar characteristics but are located in different parts of the planet

  • eg. grassland, tundra

may have same species living there but they may differ

biome classifying helps scientists predict what life can exist in a certain climate

Biosphere

A

the zone of life on earth, encompassing all of earths ecosystems

  • All interconnected with this global web of energy and matter exchange

Q

Binomial nomenclature

A

2-name naming system by Carolus Linnaeus that names organisms after their 2 most specific classification levels.

genus species

17
Q

Cladogram

A

diagram that shows relatedness of organisms.

⁃ Does NOT show ancestral relationships like a phylogenetic tree does.

18
Q

Dichotomous Key

A

tool used for identifying organisms based on their characteristics
