What is the initial status that triggers this guideline?
Suspected upper airway obstruction.
What should be assessed first?
Identify the possible cause of the obstruction.
Is this guideline recommended for newborns?
No – use CPG N0101 (suctioning instead).
How should you manage a child with an effective cough?
Use passive techniques:
* Encourage cough
* Utilise gravity
* Maintain BLS.
What techniques are used for an ineffective cough?
- Utilise gravity
- Back slaps alternating with chest thrusts.
What should be done if the patient becomes unconscious?
- Start chest compressions
- Use suction, Magill’s forceps, and forced ventilations.
What should be done if there is a loss of cardiac output?
Manage as per CPG P0201 Cardiac Arrest.
What should be done in suspected croup?
Treat as per CPG P0601-1.
What should never be done in a patient with suspected epiglottitis?
Do not inspect the airway.
What is the management for suspected epiglottitis?
Provide BLS and transport (Tx).
