Sherif
Prejudice is a problem for society so sherif helps to understand how to reduce it using superordinate goals
- violence and aggression caused by competition e.g israel and palestine real world problem so beneficial to know how to reduce
- social psycjology helps us to understand prejudice with ingroups and outgroups but doesnt consider personality like RWA ehich has been linked to prejudice
RCT - tells us how to cause and reduce rpejudice through competition and susperordinate goals so can use in society howveer based on research like sherif which isnt generelisable
Social
SIT - doesnt consider the role of personality eg RWA which has been linked to prejduice so limtied in usefulness and help when explaining how to reduce prejudice
Agency theory - helps to explain why people are obedient e.g uniforms however low in generelisbaility and ecological validity so not that useful
Baddeley
cognitive psychology has informed our understanding of how memory works
- knowing about baddeley encoding of ltm is udeful for revision
- useful for people with dementia focusing on not distracting them with steps in a task
Cognitive
Dementia - schmolck useful for letting us know about brain areas to study for helping those with semantic dementia
WMM - useful for helping students not becoming distracyed through dual task ability as well as useful with driving HOWEVER Parkin couldnt find the CE with brain scans so may not be useful
Case studies not generelisable
Raine
FMRI and PET scans useful for finding out what various parts of the brain are for which helps ppl with speech, maths, semantic dementia and aggression HOWEVER NGRII may not be representative of others
Biological
Psychodynamics - has been influential on child rearing
useful for therapy via uncovering their unconscious
useful for advertising via the id
HOWEVER not empirical
Use of methadone and buprenorphine treatment to help treat those with heroine addciton on society but only helpful to treat adddciton rather than prevent it e.g social factors OTOH rat park.
Watson and Rayner
CC - useful for aversion therapy (homosexuality and alcohol addcition) OTOH aversion therapy for homosexuality is UNETHICAL and shows issues of social control.
CC explains where phobias come from
CC useful for advertising by associating 2 things together e.g nice hair and good social life. OTOH based on animal research by pavlov however watsona nd rayner does show it works on humans
Learning
SLT is sueful for educators increasing positive behaviour from students ( prasing those follwoing rules, learning how to structure answers by watching others)
- knowledge of slt, bandura and becker useful for regulating what people can see( banning ciggarette ads, age restrictions) however SLT relies on lab settings like little ale=bert and pavlov .
Learning theories have created an understanding of phobias and how to treat them using cc techniques e.g systematic desensitisation.
