Viral Skin Infections Flashcards
(22 cards)
What are the 4 functions of the skin?
- Protection
- Thermoregulation
- Immunologic
- Synthetic Function
What are the cells of the epidermis?
- Keratinocyte
- Melanocyte
- Langerhans cells
Keratinocytes produce keratin which forms the
outer most skin layer covered by thin lipids to give protective capacity from water and heat loss, penetration of microbial agents and other trauma by physical mechanisms
What are langerhans’ cells?
Cells with dendrite processes specialized in antigen processing and presentation (building immunity to infection)
What are the natural defenses of skin?
- Keratin
- Skin sloughing
- Sebum
- Sweat
How is sweat a natural defense?
Low pH, high salt, produces lysozyme which breaks down peptidoglycan and RNase which can digest the RNA
Describe Measle’s lesions in oral mucosa
Koplik’s spots appear
Measle’s infection is through
aerosol droplets
What is the rash like on measle’s?
Macular rash with raised spots, rash befins on face and affects the trunk and extremities
What is the leading cause of vaccine preventable death in children?
Measles
What does measles cause?
Pneumonia, diarrhea, encephalitis and corneal scarring
What is German measles?
Rubella, caused by togavirus
What is Congenital Rubella Syndrome?
Rubella virus that infects placenta and spreads to fetus and alters function of multiple fetal systems by interfering with organ formation and causing systemic inflammation
Virulence factor of measles
Syncytium formation (suppresses cell mediated immunity)
Herpesvirus have a core of souble-stranded DNA surrounded by
a protein coat that exhibits icosahedral symmetry
Cold sores caused by
HHV 1 or 2
HHV 1 can remain latent in
trigeminal nerve ganglia
Herpetic whitlow
Primary lesion on the fingers or thumb of the
toddler with herpetic stomatitis, due to
autoinoculation.
Eczema herpeticum
Severe form of cutaneous herpes. It may occur in
children and adults with atopic eczema.
VZV infects the human host when
virus particles reach mucosal epithelial sites of entry
Molluscum Contagiosum (MCV) is
a common and
very contagious human-to-human transmitted
viral infection that affects the skin causing lesions
or pustules.
The rash of molluscum contagiosum is
characterized by
discrete, 2 to 5 mm papules that
are flesh-colored and dome-shaped with a
central, sharply depressed center, or umbilication.
