Week 22 Flashcards
(33 cards)
What are the four basic types of body tissues?
Epithelial, connective, muscular, and nervous.
What is the primary function of epithelial tissue?
Protection, secretion, absorption, excretion.
Where is epithelial tissue typically located?
Cover body surface, cover & line internal organs, secreting portions of glands.
What are the characteristics of epithelial tissue?
Lack blood cells, readily divide, closely packed cells, single or multiple layers.
What is the main function of connective tissue?
Bind, support, protect, fill spaces, store fat, produce blood cells.
Where is connective tissue widely distributed?
Throughout the body.
What are the characteristics of connective tissue?
Mostly have good blood supply, cells are farther apart than epithelial cells with extracellular matrix in between.
What is the primary function of muscle tissue?
Movement.
Where is muscle tissue typically found?
Attached to bones, in the walls of hollow internal organs, heart.
What is the main function of nervous tissue?
Conduct impulses for coordination, regulation, integration, and sensory reception.
Where is nervous tissue located?
Brain, spinal cord, nerves.
What is the characteristic feature of simple squamous epithelium?
Flattened nuclei.
What type of epithelium has circular nuclei of the lining cells?
Simple cuboidal epithelium.
What type of epithelium has goblet cells that produce mucous?
Nonciliated simple columnar epithelium.
What is a defining feature of ciliated simple columnar epithelium?
Cilia on the apical surface.
What is the structure of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium?
Multiple layers of cells that become flatter as they move to the apical surface.
What is the function of areolar connective tissue?
Lubricates and nourishes epithelial tissue; provides strength, elasticity, support, and immune protection.
Where is adipose tissue primarily found?
Subcutaneous layer, mucus membranes, around blood vessels, nerves, organs.
What is the function of dense regular connective tissue?
Provides strength to withstand the pulling of muscles in one direction.
What is the characteristic of dense irregular connective tissue?
Randomly arranged collagen fibers.
Where is elastic connective tissue found?
Walls of blood vessels, lungs, vocal cords, bronchial tubes.
What are the characteristics of cartilage?
Abundant matrix with scattered chondrocytes in lacunae.
Where is hyaline cartilage found?
Pads between vertebrae, knee cartilage.
What is the primary function of elastic cartilage?
Provides elastic shape and support.
