What is social identity leadership?
Emotional connection, mobilisation, team orientated

Leaders and members connected through a sense of belonging and emotional attachment to group.
What are the principles of social identity leadership?
Leaders as in group prototypes - represent ideals of group
Leaders as in group champions - make decisions / act in groups best interests
Leaders as entrepreneurs of identity - develop the essence of the group
Leaders as embedded of identity - provide structures for ‘us’ to achieve our vision
What are the identity leadership principles?
Developing, managing and advancing a shared social identity is the foundation of successful leadership

What are the three key components of defining leader effectiveness?
Mobilisation - the edge tent to which group members are motivated and compelled to achieve leaders vision
Trust - in group leaders perceived as more trustworthy
Influence - in group leaders perceived as more influential. Effectiveness of in group leaders reduced when they used reward/punishment.
What is charisma?
Key element of transformational leadership
Data suggest charisma attributed to leader by the group when leaders were perceived to represent / act for the group
Something that leaders can construct by representing the in-group.
Social identity leadership and responses to stress.
When receiving talk from high relational identity leader they concentrated better and for longer (37% higher than when low RI)
When receiving lecture from high RI lecturer they experienced positive stress response
When reviewing talk from low RI leader they experienced threat physiology (cortisol going round blood system –> arteries constrict –> stress)
What are the 3 Rs of identity leadership?
Reflecting (understand teams identity/values)
Representing (behave in line with team’s identity/values)
Realising (organise opportunities for team to progress and achieve vision)
