What is meant by the dyadic relationship?
Coaches and athletes are locked into a two person relationship and its quality can offer a measure of coaching and its effectiveness.
What a the four components of the coach athlete relationship identified by LaVoi (2007)?
Authenticity

What are the 3 + 1 Cs?
Closeness
Commitment
Complementarity
Coordination (added later)
3 + 1 Cs - what is closeness?
Interpersonal feelings
Emotional connection or affective bond developed between a C and A
Contains rational properties such as trust, respect and appreciation
3 + 1 Cs - what is commitment?
Interpersonal thoughts
Intention of C and A to maintain their athletic partnership over time
E.g. loyalty and reliance
3 + 1 Cs - what is complementarity?
Interpersonal behaviours
Describes C and A behaviours that are cooperative, collaborative and supportive
3 + 1 Cs - what is coordination?
It runs through all of the 3 Cs

What is the difference between direct and meta interpersonal perspectives?
Direct - how the A perceives C in terms of the 3 Cs
Meta - reflects athletes ability to accurately infer the coaches 3 Cs (e.g. My coach trusts me)
How are direct and meta interpersonal perspectives measured?
Direct - direct CARTQ (questionnaires - measures 3Cs)
Meta - meta CARTQ

What is the effect of gender on the CA dyad?
Same gender CA dyads typically perceive higher quality relationships (as defined by 3 Cs)
Similarity attraction theory - attracted to others who are similar
However there are plenty examples of successful different gender dyads - it’s about finding common grounds e.g. goals
All female dyads generally more satisfied with training and instruction than other gender dyads
Lowest satisfaction generally from female coach - male athlete dyad
How can personality affect the CA dyad?
Shown to affect coaches perceptions of the relationship
Coaches of athletes who have less desirable personality characteristics (e.g. anxious or avoidant attachment styles) are more likely to think relationship quality is lower.
Impact of the sport on the CA dyad?
Individual sports more likely to have higher satisfaction - might get to know coach better/quicker - 3Cs
Good quality relationships have positive intent, subsequently such relationships are;
Rewarding and satisfying Supportive and accommodating Energising and encouraging Comforting and reassuring Purposeful
What should future research direction be in regards to the CA dyad?
Integrate the notion of relationships with established leadership frameworks
Investigate role of CA relationship in injury, coping, adversity, conflict, burnout, individual differences, including perfectionist and narcissist tendencies as well as emotional intelligence.
