Define "exotics"

Any animal that isn't a dog, cat, horse, or cow
Pocket pets

What is the difference between a law (statute) and a rule/regulation?

Laws: Practice acts, violation means fines or imprisonment
Rules and regulations: Mandated by the board, violation means fines and loss of credentials

What is AWA and what do they do?

Animal Welfare Act
Establishes a requirement for the minimum standard of care for most warm blooded species but does not cover certain species (birds, fish, reptiles, lab mice and rats)
Prohibits certain practices (like dog and cock fighting)

Who enforces the AWA?

USDA

What is IACUC and what do they do?

Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
Establish standards within facility to help enforce AWA (like housing, feeding, handling, veterinary care, and review of protocols)

Who does the membership of IACUC include?

Veterinarian, member of institution not in research, community member not part of the institution

IACUC
