1.2 Combining Atoms - Covalent Bonding Flashcards
(19 cards)
How do covalent bonds form?
As atoms get closer together, the electrons become attracted to the nucleus of the other atom. So both atoms share electrons to a have full outer shell
What is a small covalent structure?
Also called simple molecular structures, only a few atoms joined together
What is a giant covalent structure?
Millions of atoms covalently bonded, forms a giant lattice structure
What is a single bond?
One pair of electrons being shared
What is a double bond?
Two pairs of electrons being shared
What is a triple bond?
Three pairs of electrons being shared.
What are the properties of covalent molecules?
- Low melting and boiling points
- Gases and liquids as room temperature
- do not conduct electricity
- Low solubility in water
