1.2 Secondary interactions Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is intramolecular bonding?
Bonding within a molecule
What is intermolecular bonding?
Bonding between molecules, or secondary interactions
How does secondary interactions influence state of matter?
Stronger secondary interactions increase melting and boiling points as more energy is required to break the bonds.
What is the strongest type of secondary interaction?
Ion-dipole
What is the weakest type of secondary interaction?
Dispersion
What factors change the strength of dispersion forces?
- Number of electrons in a molecule, having more haves them stronger
- The shape of the molecule, the closes the molecules can get in liquid and solid states make bonds stronger
What are Dipole-Dipole interactions?
When the positive and the negative sides of a polar bond are attracted to each other. Stronger than dispersion forces.
What is hydrogen bonding?
Occurs when a hydrogen bonds with an oxygen, nitrogen or fluorine. As hydrogen only has one electron when bonded with the above atoms, it is unshielded so can get really close to the negative end of another compound. Stronger than dipole-dipole.
