1.3 Hydrocarbons- Alkanes Flashcards
(17 cards)
What carbon based compounds are not organic compounds?
Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, carbonates and cyanide as hydrogen is not present
What is an Alkane?
Simplest family of hydrocarbons, with only single bonds between carbons and hydrogens. They are saturated.
What does saturated mean?
Having the maximum number of hydrogens bonded to them.
What is the general form of an Alkane?
Cn H2n+2
What are the properties of Alkanes?
As they get bigger, the dispersion becomes stronger, so their melting and boiling point increases. So does their viscosity.

What is the name of an alkane branch?
An alkyl group
What are the steps to naming an Alkane?
- Find the longest chain
- Number the carbons, starting nearest a chain
- Identify and name branches
