2.1 Quantities of Atoms and Molecules Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is a Mole?
6.02x10^23
How much is one mole of a chemical substance?
Always one mole of elementary particles
What is molar mass?
The mass of one mole of a substance and has units of g/mol
Where can Molar Mass be found?
On periodic table, same as atomic mass but with the units
How can the molar mass of a compound/molecule be found?
My adding the molar mass of each individual component together
How would you find the molar mass of water?
Double the molar mass of hydrogen and add the molar mass of oxygen
What is the formula with molar mass?
n=m/M
where n= number of moles
m= mass in grams
M=molar mass (g/mol)
What is relative Atomic Mass?
The mass of an atom found by adding the masses of its subatomic particles. It has no unit. It is the ratio of the average mass of one atom of an element to one-twelfth of the mass of carbon-12
What is relative molar mass?
The relative atomic masses of all the atoms in a molecule added together. It has no unit
What is abundance?
The occurrence of an isotope relative the other isotopes of the same element.
What is the abundance formula?
relative atomic mass of an atom = (abundance of isotope 1 times relative atomic mass of that isotope) + (abundance of isotope 2 time the relative atomic mass of isotope 2)
What is percentage composition?
The fraction of mass of an element in one mole of the compound.
What is the percentage composition formula?
Percentage of an element in a compound = (number atoms of the element in the compound times the molar mass of the element) divided by the molar has of the compound
