14.7 Brain Waves Flashcards
(7 cards)
This device measures brain waves (electrical neuron activity) mainly in the cerebral cortex, through electrodes placed on forehead and scalp
Electroencephalogram EEG
The four types of brain waves that are patterns of brain neuron activation
- Alpha
- Beta
- Theta
- Delta
These brain waves occur at 8-13 hertz; present in EEGs of almost all normal people whern resting with eyes closed, disappear during sleep
Alpha Waves
These waves are 14-30 hertz; appear when nervous system is active (periods of sensory input and mental activity)
Beta Waves
These waves have frequency of 4-7 hz; normally occur in children and adults in emotional distress
Theta Waves
These brain waves are 1-5 hz; occur during deep sleep in adults; normal in awake infants; if produced by an awake adult they indicate brain damage
Delta Waves
