The Ottawa charter for health promotion
It’s a global response to the rising demand for a new public health movement. It mainly focuses on industrialized countries but it’s also relevant worldwide. It built on the Alma-Ata Declaration, WHO’s “Health for All” goals, and discussions on intersectoral action for health.
Health promotion
Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to
improve, their health. To in order to reach a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being,an individual must be able to identify their aspirations, to satisfy needs, and to change or cope with the environment.
The fundamental conditions and resources for health are:
• peace,• shelter,• education,• food,• income,• a stable eco-system,• sustainable resources,• social justice, and equity.
What is the aim of health promotion action?
To make conditions that support health more favourable through advocacy for health.
Why is good health important?
It is a major resource for social, economic, and personal development and a key part of quality of life.
What is a focus of health promotion?
Achieving equity in health by reducing differences in health status and providing equal opportunities and resources.
What do people need to achieve their fullest health potential?
A supportive environment, access to information, life skills, and opportunities for healthy choices.
Why is control over health determinants important?
Because people can’t reach their full health potential unless they can control the factors that affect their health.
Can the health sector alone ensure health?
No — health promotion requires coordinated action from all sectors of society, not just health.
Who needs to be involved in health promotion?
Governments, social and economic sectors, local authorities, individuals, and communities.
What role do professionals and health personnel play in health promotion?
They help mediate between different interests in society to support the pursuit of health.
How should health promotion strategies be designed?
They should be adapted to local needs. And social, cultural, and economic conditions of each country or region.
