Prevention and promotion activities that aim to reducethe risk of disease and its impacts for people identified tobe at risk because of their personal characteristics (e.g.age and gender) or health condition (e.g. diabetes).National screening programmes in Wales are an exampleof secondary prevention and promotion. Specific groupsof people are identified to be at an increased risk ofdeveloping some diseases or conditions. Therefore,screening provides an opportunity for early detection sothat intervention and treatment can take place at theearliest opportunity.

Prevention and promotion activities that are aimed atreducing the impact of a condition, and improving qualityof life where a disease already exists. Tertiary preventionand promotion includes a range of interventions toenable an individual to continue living independentlywithin their own community, for example a Telecaresystem in the home of a person living with dementia. Thiswould enable an individual to live independently in theirown home whilst increasing a sense of safety and securityfor themselves and others.
