2b. Epithelial Tissues Flashcards
(31 cards)
4 primary tissue types and one-word answers for their main functions
epithelium - cover
connective - support
nervous - movement
muscle - control
what is histology?
the study of tissues
what are the 5 steps taken to prepare to view tissue samples?
- removal of tissue from the body via a biopsy
- fixation of tissue
- embedding of tissue
- slicing the tissue and mounting tissue on a slide
- staining and viewing under a microscope
what stains the nuclei purple for viewing under a microscope?
haemotoxylin
what are the two points to consider when viewing a tissue sample under a microscope?
the plane the tissue has been cut.
the magnification of the image.
4 characteristics of epithelium
covers and protects
distinct cell surfaces
avascular but innervated
ability to regenerate
what 2 properties classify epithelium
numbers of cells/layers of cells.
cell shape
describe simple squamous epithelium
Single layer of flattened cells with sparse cytoplasm
what is the function of simple squamous epithelium?
filtration, diffusion and some secretion
where can simple squamous epithelium be found?
alveoli of lungs, kidney glomeruli, serous membranes
describe simple cuboidal epithelium
Single layer of cube-shaped cells. Some of these cells have microvilli or cilia
what is the function of simple cuboidal epithelium?
absorption, secretion, movement (cilia)
where can simple cuboidal epithelium be found?
kidney tubules and terminal bronchioles.
describe simple columnar epithelium
Single layer of columnar shaped cells. Some cells have cilia
what is the function of simple columnar epithelium?
absorption, secretion and movement.
where can simple columnar epithelium be found?
intestines, stomach, fallopian tubes and lungs.
describe transitional epithelium
Resembles stratified squamous and stratified cuboidal cells depending on its state.
what is the function of transitional epithelium?
accommodate changes in fluid volume in the organs
where can transitional epithelium be found?
urinary bladder, ureter, and upper part of urethra
describe stratified squamous epithelium
Basal cells are cuboidal or columnar and become progressively flatter as you move to the surface. Several layers of cells:
○ Keratinized
○ Non-keratinized
what is the function of stratified squamous epithelium?
protect against abrasion and loss of water - wear and tear epithelium
where can stratified squamous epithelium be found?
keratinized - sole of feet, palm of hands, skin
Non-keratinized - mouth, oesophagus, anus, vagina
describe stratified cuboidal epithelium
Several layers cube-shaped cells laying on a basal membrane
rare tissue
what is the function of stratified cuboidal epithelium?
absorption, secretion and protection
