3.10 - Cell Cycle Flashcards
The phases of the cell cycle The processes that take place during interphase (8 cards)
Why do organisms need new cells?
To grow and repair tissues
What is the cell cycle?
Sequence of steps for cell division
What are the three main phases of the cell cycle?
- Interphase - This occupies the majority of the cycle as cells prepare for division.
- Mitosis - This is when the nucleus of the cell divides in two.
- Cytokinesis - This is when the whole cell and cytoplasm divides in two to produce two identical cells.
What happens during interphase?
Cells prepare for division
Preparation involves the following processes:
* Cell growth - This includes an increase in cytoplasm.
* Synthesis of proteins - These proteins are used to replicate organelles.
* Replicating DNA - This results in double the genetic material.
What happens during mitosis?
Nucleus divides in two
What happens during cytokinesis?
Cell and cytoplasm divide in two
What processes occur during interphase?
3 processes
- Cell growth
- protein synthesis
- DNA replication
What does replicating DNA result in?
Double the genetic material
