5.3 - T Lymphocytes & Cell-mediated Immunity Flashcards
The different types of lymphocytes The different types of T cells The role of T cells in the cellular response (15 cards)
What are specific defense mechanisms?
i.e like what are the their key characteristics
- Slower defenses
- Produce a unique response for each pathogen
What do specific defenses provide?
Long-term immunity
What type of white blood cell is involved in specific immune response?
Lymphocytes
Where are lymphocytes produced?
Bone marrow
What are the two types of lymphocytes?
T cells and B cells
Where do T cells mature?
Thymus gland
What type of response are T cells involved in?
Cellular response
Specific responce
Where do B cells mature?
Bone marrow
What type of response are B cells involved in?
Humoral response
Specific response
What are the types of T cells?
3 types
- Helper T cells
- Cytotoxic T cells
- Memory T cells
What do helper T cells do?
Bind to antigens on APCs
What do cytotoxic T cells do?
Kill abnormal and foreign cells using perforin
What do memory T cells do?
Provide long-term immunity
What are the stages of the cellular response?
3 stages
- Phagocytes engulf pathogens and display their antigens on the cell-surface. They are now known as antigen-presenting cells.
- Helper T cells with complementary receptors bind to these antigens.
- On binding, the helper T cell is activated to divide by mitosis to form genetically identical clones.
What functions do cloned T cells carry out?
4 functions
- Develop into memory cells
- Stimulate phagocytosis
- Stimulate division of B cells
- Activate cytotoxic T cells
