3a- SABA Drugs Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is SABA primary effect?
- Bronchodilation (Acts on B2 receptors)
What are SABA secondary effects? (2)
- ↑Mucus Production
- ↓Mast Cell Degranulation
How are the primary effects carried out?
- ↑cAMP via B2 Receptors –> Smooth Muscle Relaxation
What are 3 SABA Drugs?
Very Bright Apple
- Ventolin (Salbutamol)
- Bricanyl
- Airomir
Ventolin (Salbutamol)
Describe its times and dosage amount (both MDI + Neb)
- Onset –> 5-15min
- Peak –> 30-60min
- Duration –> 4-6hrs
- Dosage –> 100µg per puff, or 2.5-5.0mg (Neb)
What does brinacyl act as? How is it administered?
- Acts as bronchodilator
- Administered –> Inhalational Route + DPI
Ventolin (Salbutamol)
What are common forms of this drug? What are uncommon?
- Common –> MDI + DPI + Neb
- Uncommon –> IV + Tablet
Ventolin (Salbutamol)
What are 2 common side effects?
- HR↑ due to slight B1 affinity
- Ca2+↑ –> Jittery + Shaking
Ventolin (Salbutamol)
What are Less common side effects? (4)
- Nausea/Headache/Tremor
- Hyperglycemia
- Hypokalemia
- Reaction to propellants/additives
Ventolin (Salbutamol)
What are long term side effects? (2)
- Drug tolerance
- Loss of bronchoprotection
Ventolin (Salbutamol)
What is its off label use?
Helps with hyperglycemia via IV use
If a SABA causes K+ to shift intracellularly, what does that cause?
Hypokalemia
Ventolin (Salbutamol)
What is the clearest sign that this drug works?
- Improved airflow + ↓Wheezing + ↓SOB
Airomir
What are its times?
- Onset –> 5-15min
- Peak –> 30-60min
- Duration –> 3-6hrs
Airomir
What are its available forms (4)?
- MDI (100µg/puff, 1-2 puff every 4-6hrs prn)
- Neb
- Oral tablets + syrup
- IV
Airomir
What are its side effects? (4)
- Tremor/Anxiety/Headache
- Tachycardia, palpatations
- Hypokalemia, hyperglycemia
- Throat irritation + cough
Airomir
What are its off-label uses? (4)
- Treat hyperkalemia
- Tocolysis (labour delay)
- Exercise-induced bronchospasm
- Sometimes, given before intubation to ↓airway resistance
