Nebulized Epinephrine
What is the goal for this drug?
- To Vasoconstrict swollen vocal cords and upper airway
- Leads to easier breathing + reduced to no stridor

What is its dose?
5ml of 1:1000 epi (1mg/ml)

What can this do?
- Act as bronchodilator + anti-inflammatory

When is it used?
- In severe cases of asthma (IV solution).
- Acts as electrolyte
A1 Anti-Trypsin
What does it do?
- Turns off ptorease enzymes (break up foreign substances + bacteria)

What happens if there is a deficiency of this?
- Protease enzymes start attacking normal, healthy elastic tissue.
Drug: Prolastin
What does this drug do? When is it not used?
- Used to replace A1 Anti-Trypsin
- NOT used in COPD due to smoking

Once a week, IV form

- Smooth muscle contraction

- Itching/irritation/pain

- H2 Receptors
Where are H1 receptors found?
Nerve endings + Smooth Muscle + Vessels + Mucus cells + Brain
Where are H2 Receptors found?
Stomach.
- Help regulate gastric acid secretions
H1 Anti-Histamines
How do they act and where are the 2 generations found?
- Competitive Antagonists
- 1st gen –> OTC cold + allergy meds
- 2nd gen –> Anti-allergy use (prescription)
What are 2 examples of 1st gen anti-histamines?
You take 1 of them all the time, and the other is the competitor
- Benedryl
- Gravol
What are the primary effects of 1st gen anti-histamines?
- Anti-histamine
- Anti-cholinergic
- Mild sedation
- Anti-ematic, nausea, motion sickness
What are 2 examples of 2nd gen anti-histamine drugs

- Reactin
- Claritin
2nd gen anti-histamines
How do these drugs differ from 1st gen drugs?
- Not lipophilic –> No sedation
- No dryness
- 12hr lasting vs 4-6 for 1st gen
