legislature
The part of the government that makes the laws.
bill of rights
A written list of freedoms that a government promises to protect.
Navigation Acts
Laws that governed trade between England and its colonies. Colonists were required to ship certain products only to England. These acts made colonists very angry because they were forbidden from trading with other countries.
mercantilism
When trade is controlled by the mother country to make it richer and stronger.
Peter Zenger
A newspaper publisher who established the basic idea of freedom of the press.
Parliament
The lawmaking body of British government.
libel
A published false statement that is damaging to a person’s reputation.
extended family
A family including grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other relatives who all live nearby or in one household.
apprentice
A person who works for another in order to learn a trade.
gentry
Upper class of colonial society that included wealthy planters, merchants, ministers, royal officials, and successful lawyers. They were often called the “big wigs” because of wigs worn to show off their status in society.
indentured servants
Colonists who received free passage to North America in exchange for working without pay for a certain number of years.
