constitution
A document in which the laws, principles, organizations and processes of a government are established.
Shays’ Rebellion (1786)
Daniel Shays, a veteran of the Continental Army, led a rebellion of poor farmers in Massachusetts who demanded debt relief, lower taxes, and protections against property seizures.
executive
In government, person who runs the government and sees that the laws are carried out.
Articles of Confederation
The first constitution of the U.S. 1781-1788. It had only one branch of government called Congress. It had no executive or judicial branches, no power to tax, no power to regulate trade and could not enforce the laws. It could ask the states for money, borrow money, declare war, print money, make treaties with other nations and Natives and pick military officers.
Continentals
Paper bills issued by the Continental Congress to finance the revolution but the overprinting of bills made them basically worthless.
Land Ordinance of 1785
A law that divided much of the NW United States into a system of townships to help sell of land to settlers. Square 16 was set up to support public schools.
Northwest Ordinance of 1787
Created the Northwest Territory (area north of the Ohio River and west of Pennsylvania). Slavery was prohibited and five new states were established under this ordinance. Those were MI, WI, IL, IN and OH.
Britain
Would not leave its forts in the Ohio River Valley after the Revolutionary War.
Spain
Prevented American farmers and shippers from using New Orleans at the mouth of the Mississippi River. This caused Americans to send goods over the Appalachian Mountains to get them east.
