Triangular Trade Route
A three way system of trade during 1600-1800s. Yankee traders took rum, iron, gunpowder, cloth and tools to West Africa. Then Africans were brought to the Western Hemisphere. Then some slaves, sugar and molasses were taken back to the English Colonies.
Middle Passage
A voyage that brought enslaved Africans across the Atlantic Ocean to North America, South America and the West Indies.

The belief that one race is superior to another.
public school
School supported by taxes and first set up in the New England Colonies.

Oldest college in the English Colonies and U.S.
Natural rights
The idea that all humans are born with rights, which include the right to life, liberty, and property.
Divine rights
The idea that people get rights from a monarch that is chosen by god.
Benjamin Franklin
American intellectual, inventor, and politician. He helped to negotiate French support for the American Revolution. He also helped write the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution.
separation of powers
The division of power among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government.
Great Awakening
A religious movement that swept through the colonies in the 1730’s and 1740’s that led to the creation of some new churches.
John Locke
English philosopher who argued that people have natural rights. These are life, liberty and property. He also believed government got it power from the consent of the governed.
Baron de Montesquieu
French philosopher who believed government should have separation of powers and each branch should be able to watch the other two branches to make sure they don’t become to powerful.
Voltaire
French philosopher who believed in freedom of speech and press.
Legislative branch
The branch of government that makes the laws.
Executive branch
The branch of government that enforces or carries out the laws.
Judicial branch
The branch of government that interprets laws to make sure they are legal.
Enlightenment
A movement that emphasized science and reason as guides to help see the world more clearly.
