Policy that government should interfere as little as possible in the nation’s economy. It means “hands-off” or “let alone” in French.

The power of the courts to declare laws unconstitutional.
Marbury v. Madison (1803)
Supreme Court case that established the principle of “judicial review”—the idea that the Supreme Court had the final authority to determine constitutionality of a law or action by Congress or the Executive branch.

Mountain ridge that separates river systems flowing toward opposite sides of a continent.
Louisiana Purchase (1803)
Jefferson sent Monroe to Paris to purchase New Orleans; Monroe ended up spending $15 million. because he was able to get all of Louisiana. President Jefferson was conflicted about the purchase since he didn’t feel he had the authority to do so under the Constitution. The deal was too good to pass up and provided more than enough land to fulfill his dream of an America populated with small farmers. He created a treaty so he could purchase the land.
Lewis and Clark Expedition
An expedition led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark that began in 1804 to explore the Louisiana Purchase and find a route to the Pacific Ocean.
Zebulon Pike
Leader of a southern expedition in the Louisiana Territory.
Sacajawea
Native American woman who served as a guide an interpreter for the Lewis and Clark expedition.
Haiti
Colony in the Caribbean Sea that successfully freed themselves from French rule. Toussaint L’Ouverture led this uprising.
