Barbary States
Nations along the coast of North Africa to which the United States paid a yearly tribute so they would stop seizing our ships. President Jefferson stopped paying the tribute and sent the U.S. Navy and Marines to attack the Barbary States.
Embargo Act of 1807
Act passed by Congress in 1807 prohibiting American ships from leaving for any foreign port. This was done to punish Britain and France for interfering with our trade, but backfired when the economy fell. New Englanders especially hated the law because because that part of the nation made a lot of money from trade with other nations.
Impressment
British practice of taking American sailors and forcing them into military service.
Non-Intercourse Act of 1809
Replaced the Embargo of 1807. Unlike the Embargo, which prevented American trade with all foreign nations, this act only prevented trade with France and Britain.
Tecumseh and the Prophet
A Shawnee chief and his brother that wanted to unite several tribes in Ohio and the Indiana territory against American settlers. Their deaths ended the hope of an Indian Confederacy.
nationalism
A strong feeling of pride in and devotion to one’s country.
War Hawks
Southerners and Westerners who were eager for war with Britain. They had a strong sense of nationalism and they wanted to takeover British land in North America and expand. They wanted to conquer British Canada and Spanish Florida.

Shutting a port of roadway to prevent people or supplies from coming into or leaving an area.
Oliver Hazard Perry
Naval officer who led the US victory over the British on Lake Erie in 1813.
Andrew Jackson
American General who defeated the Creek Indians at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend and British at New Orleans.
USS Constitution (Old Ironsides)
Famous American frigate that was larger and heavier than most British ships. It defeated the British Warship Guerriere off the coast of Newfoundland in 1812.
Dolley Madison
James Madison’s wife who gathered important papers and a painting of George Washington and fled the White House before the British arrived in 1814.
Battle of Fort McHenry (Baltimore)
Battle in 1814 when the British tried to capture the fort and Baltimore. The Americans held off the attack.
Francis Scott Key
United States lawyer and poet who wrote a poem after witnessing the British attack on Baltimore during the War of 1812. The poem later became the Star Spangled Banner.
Treaty of Ghent (1814)
Ended the War of 1812. Did not solve the causes of the war (stalemate for both sides).
Battle of New Orleans (1815)
Famous battle the occurred AFTER the War of 1812 is finished. Battle that made Andrew Jackson a war hero as he was able to bring together Americans and inspire them to defeat the British.
