A

Nations along the coast of North Africa to which the United States paid a yearly tribute so they would stop seizing our ships. President Jefferson stopped paying the tribute and sent the U.S. Navy and Marines to attack the Barbary States.

Embargo Act of 1807

A

Act passed by Congress in 1807 prohibiting American ships from leaving for any foreign port. This was done to punish Britain and France for interfering with our trade, but backfired when the economy fell. New Englanders especially hated the law because because that part of the nation made a lot of money from trade with other nations.
