New France
French colony in North America, with a capital in Quebec, founded 1608. New France fell to the British in 1763. It is the tan color on the map.
13 British Colonies
Colonies on the Atlantic Coast that continued to push westward. The individual colonies would often not work together to deal with problems. It is the green color on the Atlantic Coast.
French and Indian War
(1754-1763) War fought in the colonies between the British and the French for possession of the Ohio Valley area. The British won.
Ohio River Valley
Piece of land that led to the French and Indian War.
French Advantages in French and Indian War
- France used professional soldiers rather than a militia of volunteers.
- The French had the help of loyal Indian tribes such as The Huron and Algonquin.
-Fought like the Native Americans when fighting in the woods.
French disadvantages in the French and Indian War
-Fewer people to fight and larger so it was harder to defend.
British advantages during the French and Indian War
-More colonists to fight with British soldiers.
-Stronger navy to blockade New France.
-The 13 Colonies were smaller so it was easier to defend.
British disadvantages during the French and Indian War
-The British Army didn’t know how to fight in the woods of North America.
-The colonists didn’t always work together.
Hurons and Algonquins
Two Native American tribes who fought with the French in the French and Indian War.
Iroquois Confederacy
Joined the British side in the French and Indian War once the British started winning.
Albany Plan of Union
Plan proposed by Benjamin Franklin in 1754 that aimed to unite the 13 colonies for trade, military, and other purposes. The plan was turned down by the colonies.
George Washington during the French and Indian War
Sent by the governor of Virginia to tell the French to leave the Ohio River Valley but they won’t leave without force. He fought at the first battle of the war and surrendered Fort Necessity.
Battle of Quebec (1759)
It was a battle between the British and the French for control of North America. During the night, half of General Wolfe’s men climbed a cliff protecting Quebec. In the morning, Wolfe’s men had surrounded Quebec. Quebec was called “The Key to the Continent” because it controlled access to the St. Lawrence River and Great Lakes.
Treaty of Paris 1763
The Peace Treaty of Paris 1763 ended the French Indian War (The Seven Years War). Britain gained France’s lands east of the Mississippi River and Spanish Florida. Spain gained France’s lands west of the Mississippi River.
William Pitt
The Prime Minister of Britain during the French and Indian War. He increased the amount of British troops and military supplies in the colonies. That was one reason why Britain won the war.

The use of troops or ships to prevent supplies/people from entering or leaving a place.
