Whiskey Rebellion

A

From 1791-1794, many farmers in Western Pennsylvania refused to pay the federal tax on alcohol. Some tax collectors were tarred and feathered as some compared this tax to the British used of taxation.

-President Washington sent 13,000 militia to put down the rebellion
-Farmers who refused to follow the law fled when they heard troops were coming
-Hamilton wanted the leaders of the rebellion executed, but President Washington said no and pardoned them
-The federal government showed that laws were going to be enforced
