A

British tunneled under the hill placing 5 mines into the tunels this blew the top of the hill
- This was done by men from tunnelling companies who all worked in tunnelling companies previously. E.g., tube tunnel diggers from London, coal miners or sewage drain diggers in Manchester.

These men who dug the tunnels were often shorter than the minimum height requirement for the army, these tunnel diggers often experienced high death rates.

The area was perfect for tunning, it had chalky soil and already had pre-existing network of caves and quarries which the British decided to connect their new tunnels up with. - Dug by British and NZ tunnelling companies.

2.5 miles of tunnels were dug, and they provided shelter against German attacks. - 250,000 men could be stationed in the tunnels, and it contained electricity and running water as well as a fully functioning hospital called Thomas Caves as well as a small transport railway system.
