What happened to lepers

A

Banished from their communities, sent to isolated islands, or sent to leper houses, where sometimes people looked after them even though there was no cure. Some were allowed to stay in their houses but had to wear a bell to announce themselves and as well as wearing a cape to avoid the spread of disease (some idea about the spread of disease)

Hypocrites ancient Greek philosopher -Humor comes from the Greek word "humon," meaning fluid - Hypocrites was obsessed with the symptoms of his patients and the theory of the 4 humors fitted to most

A Physician in ancient Rome, 2nd century CE -Physician in gladiatorial school - personal Physician of the roman emperor - Left behind 350 books - the theory if the 4 humors into the theory of the 4 opposites

Used himself as an example of someone who had too much choler (choleric) as it made him short tempered.

What did Galen theorise about the circulatory system?
Blood was created in the liver and was used up as a fuel for the body.

What was the theory of the 4 opposites
Galen developed the theory of the 4 humors to the theory of the 4 opposites. -he described that a humor could be ballanced out by eating an opposing humor. E.G - Phlegm - linked with cold + water could be cured by eating hot chilli peppers. E.G - Fever=too hot = to much blood = cucumbers.

Why was Galens ideas popular? (4)
1- They agreed with the church in terms of having a soul. So ideas promoted by the church (educational system for many) 2- Very detailed theory can be used to explain any illness mental or physical. 3-No other scientific explanation for the cause of disease - could be twisted to explain everything.
