How important was the church and religion in the early 1200/
Very
It was catholic
Attended services regularly and gave a donation called a tithe
What was the donation given to the church called and what was it used for?
-Tithe
- Used to provide medical services to the community and the people who were unable to take care of themselves.

Why was the chuch providing education important for the stagnation of belief about illness
The church provided a basic education to those who did not receive a formal education.
-people coulnd read or write so learned from biblie teachings (read) sermons and pictures/paintings in the church.
What did the church teach about sin and illness? (2)
Those who commited a sin would be punished by god by illness.
- God could also use disease to test the faith of people.
How did the belief about sin and illness continue, how did the church use it as proof? (4 steps)
-God sent disease as a punishment for sin
-The Church taught people to pray and ask forgiveness from god
- If a person prayed to god for forgiveness and healed the church used it as proof of the divine.
- Church get more supportand gains more power and influence.
Leprosy
Painful skin condition that caused spots then paralysis and then death
What was leprosy seen as
A punishment for sin from god.
What happened to lepers
Banished from their communities, sent to isolated islands, or sent to leper houses, where sometimes people looked after them even though there was no cure. Some were allowed to stay in their houses but had to wear a bell to announce themselves and as well as wearing a cape to avoid the spread of disease (some idea about the spread of disease)
What were the 2 main theory’s about the cause of disease in medieval times
-Religion the church and God
- Astrology.
How did the doctors diagnose patients using astrology. (2)
-looking at the planetary alignments and star charts when the person was born and when they fell ill.
Did the church agree with astrology (2)
-At the beginning no as it was one step away from predicting the future (predestination, which during the 1200s, Catholics were against in their religious beliefs)
- But after the black death, they began to agree with it more as the black death fell on a poor planetary alignment
What was the theory of the 4 Humors and who created it (basic)
Hypocrites, the universe has 4 different elements, so the body should too.
Why was Astrology deemed as a good explanation for disease
Hypocrites encouraged natural explanations for disease, and hypocrites were deemed very smart and important figures in medieval medicine.

Blood (sanguine)
Choler ( Choleric)
Black bile (melenchonic)
Phlegm (phlematic)
What did the four humours had to be in order to be healthy
Balanced and equal.

- hot red skin = to much blood (hot element) so they would blood let to remove blood.
