  • The Cuban government confiscated all of the land that belonged to non-Cuban nationals and paid compensation to them however, the US government refused to acknowledge the scheme
  • Although Castro had already appointed some communist members into his government, Khrushchev offered to by Cuban sugar in order to offer aid, THERE WAS ALSO A SECRET CLAUSE SAYING THE SOVIETS WOULD SUPPLY WEPONS TO CUBA

  • 100 killed 1,100 imprisoned
  • USA spent 4.5 mil and lost CIA recourses and time

  • They wrongly assumed that the Cuban people would join them but it seemed that they were happy under Castro

  • USA

= public humiliation and looked like Hypocrites of the Soviet regime and their attempt to overthrow Eastern European movements in the name of Communism, and yet they support a group to overthrow the communist government so that they can have more control.

  • Quick to point out that there had been no complaints about the Castro government and that no public joined the Bay of Pigs troops, of was clear that they didn’t want the corruption seen under the previous government ( BATISTA REGIME)

A

1 - NATO positioned nuclear missiles in Turkey only a short distance from the soviet union ( may have wanted the USA to feel how they felt with the missiles in Turkey)

  • Also could have just wanted them to be removed

2 - The building of the Berlin Wall may have been seen by soviet critics to be a failure, and maybe winning Cuba will be seen as a success and restore his prestige

3- The USA had already tried to overthrow the Cuban government once if they succeed, it will be a major loss for the soviet union and a major defeat of communism.

Kennedy ignored the second telegram and accepted the first one - meanwhile the US sec Robert Kennedy met the soviet ambassador and agreed to remove the missiles in Türkiye. However this was kept secret.

- A direct phone line set up between the white house and the kremlin - The test ban treaty ( not using or testing nuclear weapons in the in space, underwater or in the atmosphere. - The outer-space treaty preventing putting nuclear weapons into orbit and not to use space for military purposes - the non proliferation treaty prevented the sharing of nuclear weapons with other countries.

- Kennedy showed to be a strong leader in his government and to Khrushchev became very popular in his government - Gave him more confidence to deal with the soviet union - Khrushchev thought he had won as he had guaranteed the security of Cuba - Soviet union disagreed major loss of confidence and popularity lead to his dismissal in 1964

- 20th august 1968 500,000 troops invaded Czech and ended the Prague spring - little resistance as Brezhnev ordered the czeck army to remain in the barracks - PUBLIC TOOK ACTION AND BLOCKED STREETS AND ATTAKING TANKS - army were suprised with the hostility they encountered.

- Said that if any actions from an individual communist country affected all communist countries, so it was the duty of the effected communist countries to step in and intervene with those actions - what he was really saying was all communist countries needed to be prevented from introducing reforms to make their country more liberal.
