Cell Structure and Function - Endosymbiosis Flashcards

1
Q

endosymbiosis

A
  • a mutually beneficial relationship within a cell.
  • Mitochondria and Chloroplasts were at one time small prokaryotes that began living inside larger cells.
  • Over time the cells began working together beneficially and eventually became one organism.
  • They “got inside” a eukaryotic cell by first being a parasite or as a prey item for the larger cell.

Q

mitochondria and chloroplasts

A
  • Mitochondria are found in all cells.
  • Chloroplasts are found in photosynthetic cells.
These organelles contain their own DNA and ribosomes.
  • Ribosomes are smaller than the cellular ribosomes.
  • DNA is more similar to the DNA in prokaryotic cells.
  • Double-membraned: both have an outer membrane and an inner membrane system including:
  • Cristae in Mitochondria
  • Thylakoids and grana in Chloroplast
