Cell Transport - Osmosis Flashcards

1
Q

Osmosis

A
  • occurs when molecules in a solution cannot cross the membrane
  • water corsses the membrane and changes the concentration of the solution
  • Diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane
  • Movement from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
  • Why don’t many cells burst?
  • Animal cells are usually in an isotonic solution or hypertonic solution where the cell would shrink.
  • If they are in a hypotonic solution where water will move into the cell, animal cells have contractile vacuoles to pump water back out using energy.
