Introduction to Intelligence
Intelligence
The ability to learn from experience, solve problems, and use our knowledge to adapt to new situations.
Psychometric Psychologists
Administer & score tests for neuro, psycho, etc.
General Intelligence
Overall performance on mental ability tests.
Factor Analysis
A statistical procedure that identifies clusters of related items on a test; used to identify different dimensions of performance that underline a person’s total score.
Intelligence Quotient (IQ)
A standard measure of an individuals intelligence level based on psychological tests.
Mental Age
Age level of an individuals mental ability.
Wechsler Intelligence Scale
IQ test designed to measure intelligence & cognitive ability.
Crystallized Intelligence
Ones lifetime of intellectual achievement.
Fluid Intelligence
The capacity to think logically & solve problems in novel situations, independent of acquired knowledge.
Triarchic Theory of Intelligence
More of a cognitive look at intelligence rather than a psychometric focus.
- Analytic: academic, problem-solving
- Creative: insights, synthesis, &
ability to react
- Practical: adaptation or changing
environment
Multiple Intelligences
The extend to which humans possess different kinds of minds and therefore learn, remember, perform, & understand in different ways.
Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
The ability to understand and manage your emotions.
Savant Syndrome
A rare condition in which someone with significant mental disabilities demonstrate certain abilities for in excess of average.
