Cognitive Development in Childhood
Schema
Concepts or organized cluster of knowledge (mental groupings), that we use to understand & interpret information.
Assimilation
The cognitive process of making new information fit in with your existing understanding of the world.
Accommodation
What occurs when new information or experiences cause you to modify your existing schemas.
Sensorimotor Stage
Birth to 2 years old, during which infants know the world mostly in terms of their sensory & motor activities.
Object Permancence
The awareness that objects continue to exist even when not perceived.
Sense of Self
How you perceive yourself as a whole.
Pre-operational Stage
2 - 7 years old during which a child learns to use language but does not yet comprehend the mental operations of concrete logic.
Egocentrism
A child’s difficulty taking another’s POV.
Theory of Mind
The ability to think about mental states, both your own & those of others.
Conservation
Properties such as mass, volume, and number remain the same despite changes in the forms of objects.
Concrete Operational Stage
7 - 11 years old where children gain mental operations that enable them to think logically about events.
Formal Operational Stage
12+ years during which people begin to think logically about abstract concepts.
Abstract Reasoning
The ability to analyze information, detect patterns, relationships, and sore problems on a complex, intangible level.
