Bias, Prejudice, and Discrimination
Prejudice
A negative feeling or attitude about one of those mental groupings of people.
Stereotyping
An over-generalized thought about a particular category of people.
Discrimination
A negative behavior done towards a certain group of people because of where/who they are.
Ingroup
Mentality of “us”; people with whom we share a common identity.
Ethnocentrism
Assuming the superiority of one’s ethnic group.
Out-Group Homogeneity Bias
Cognitive bias in which people mistakenly perceive out-group members as being a homogenous group.
Out-group
Mentality of “them”; those perceived as different or apart from our in-group.
Scapegoat Theory
The theory that prejudice offers an outlet for anger by providing someone to blame.
Ultimate Attribution Error
Tendency for persons from one group to determine that any bad acts by members of an out-group are caused by internal attributes or traits rather than by external circumstances or situations.
