Theories of Emotion
Emotion
A natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one’s circumstance, mood, or relationships with others.
James-Lange Theory
When you experience emotion because you had a bodily reaction.
Schachter’s Two Factor Theory
One has emotions because of a bodily reaction and because they thought about the situation.
Facial Feedback Hypothesis
Facial expression can also influence emotion.
Canon-Bard Theory
When one has a bodily and emotional reaction simultaneously, but are not connected.
Joseph LeDoux’s Theory
Involves the primary emotion of fear. States that primary emotions are instinctive responses that we have.
Display Rules
Social norms that distinguish how one should express their emotions.

-Happy, sad, disgust, fear, anger, & surprise
-Found across all cultures
-Can be seen in primates
Microexpressions
Facial expressions that occur within a fraction of a second.
