Side effects of phenothiazines

A
  • Hypotension -> collapse
  • Tissue irritation, allergy, excitation in horses
  • Penile prolapse in horses
  • Third eyelid prolaps in pets
  • Incr. prolactin, FSH, decr. LH, ADH and oxytoxin
  • Epilepsy, extrapyramidal symptoms
  • Bulldogs and boxers are sensitive
  • Not before transportation before abattoir

-Bradycardia, malignant arrhytmias
-Sweating in horses
-Ecbolicaction: contraindictive in pregnant females

Effects of Detomidine

A

-More potent than Xylazine, licensed for Eq use
-No loss of consciousness
-Duration of action is dose dependent
Side effects:
-Hypertension, then hypotension
-Bradycardia
-Resp. dep.
-Diuresis
-Hypothermia, sweating, snoring, tremor

A

Alone or in comb. w. ketamine, thiopentone or opiod drugs

  • Similar effects as Xylazine, but more safe/reliable

- Developed for cats and dogs
