When and where did the IR start?
Britain in the 1700s
What could the IR never happened without?
Wealth generated through slave trade and slave labour on the plantations in colonies.
How did merchants in Britain become wealthy?
They became wealthy by products produced by slave labour.
The Slave labour wealth was used to finance:
- Big factories
- New inventions (spinning, weaving machines that increased and sped up production).
- Steam engine that was used to power machines in factories, farms, mines and the 1st railway.
- Coal mines that produced coal for steam engines
- Iron mines (needed to make all machines).
- Building of ships to carry raw materials, manufactured goods to and from colonies.
- Canals to transport goods between mines, factories and ports

From West Africa to North America and the Caribbean where they were sold to work on cotton and tobacco plantations.
What we’re the slaves called by slave owners?
Black gold
Plantation owners…
Bought slaves who lost all their rights and freedom. They had to live in terrible living conditions and often died because of the lack of medical care, not enough food and extremely hard physical work. Children worked on plantations.
Which British port became wealthy?
Ports like Bristol, Liverpool and London. This was due to the taxes collected from the imports and exports.
What created a lot of additional jobs in Britain?
The successful trade and increasing demand for British goods in Africa and the Americas.
