They were between the Xhosa and the Trekboers over who had the right to graze their cattle in the area.
What did the VOC do about the 1st 3 frontier wars?
They sent a commando to help the Trekboers against the Xhosa and draw up a peace treaty.

No, they were unable to drive the Xhosa out of the area.
What did the British do when they took the Cape to help with the frontier wars?
They sent well-trained troops into Suurveld. This was the beginning of the end of Xhosa independence.
Who was determined to drive the Xhosa out of Suurveld and why?
The British governor Sir John Cradock. He was protecting the interests of the Dutch farmers who were the main suppliers of meat for Cape Town.

Military forts were built along the Fish river.

The occasional raids on settler farms by the Xhosa turned into the 6th fierce frontier War, led by the Xhosa chief, Hintsa.
How many people were left homeless after the 6th frontier war?
7,000 people of both races.

Hintsa, who was trying to negotiate for peace, was captured and held by the leader of the British army, Colonel Harry Smith. After a few days, Hintsa was wounded while escaping imprisonment and hid in the river. Soldiers found him there and shot him dead.
What was done with Hinsta’s head?
It was cut off and sent back to Britain as a trophy. Hintsa became a Xhosa hero.
What was the end result of the wars?
All the territory and inhabitants in the Eastern Cape came under British authority.
