After Napoleonic wars ended, their was an outcry about the abuses that women and children suffered when working long hours in factories and mines in Britain.
Which 2 ideas developed at the same time?
Equality and freedom and the demand for abolition of slavery. These ideas spread to the Cape.

Missionaries in south africa, led by Dr John Phillip.

Law called ordinance 50 was passed:
The Khoi-khoi had equal rights to the Europeans in in Cape
Pass laws were abolished
The Khoi-khoi could own land
In 1834 all slaves were given freedom

What troubled slaves when they were set free?
They didn’t know where to go, where to buy clothes, where to get food etc.
Apprentice system
Slaves continue to do unpaid work for their owners for 4 years, after that they decide what they want to do.
Which slaves could find work easily? (5)
Slaves who had skills like building, wagon-making, cooking, sewing and carpentry.
What did many farm labourers find themselves in and what did they do?
Worse positions than before, and continued working for their farm owners.
Why were slave owners furious?
Abolition of slavery. They lost huge amounts of money invested in slaves and owners who treated their slaves harshly lost labourers. They also had an added expense of having to pay salaries.
What idea did the colonists not accept?
The Khoi-khoi and freed slaves were equal to them.
