What is a frontier?
The edge of a settled area where different communities or countries meet.
When the Dutch first arrived, how much land did they occupy.
A few square kilometers around Cape Town.
What did the Free Burghers do that expanded the Frontier?
Free Burghers left the VOC and went to farm, they expanded the frontier and took over some of the land that the Khoi-khoi had traditionally used for grazing. As a result the Khoi-khoi were pushed further inland.
Why did the frontier continue to expand?
Trekboers moved inland.
What happened to the Khoi-khoi when the frontiers were expanded even further?
The Khoi-khoi were dispossessed of more land and fled to the mountainous regions, the Eastern Cape or became servants to the Dutch.
Why and which towns developed into frontiers?
As the number of European settlers grew, towns like Swellendam and Graaff-Reinet were developed on the frontiers.
Which directions did the frontier expand in and why?
It expanded not only North but also East. This was because Dutch farmers wanted to get away from the hot, dry summers and the cold, wet winters and move to an area which offered mild winters and summer rainfall.
Where did the Dutch farmers find good grazing?
Between the Sundays and Fish rivers.
Who did they encounter by the rivers?
Xhosa and Khoi-khoi farmers, but there were no problems until more settlers started to arrive in the area.

Dutch officials created a fixed boundary.
What were the Xhosa farmers on the West of the boundary told to do?
They were told to move east of the boundary, which made the Xhosa angry and resulted in the 9 frontier wars.
