A

They didn’t know anyhtjng about farming. Problems: draught, diseases, floods, wild animals Xhosa raids, lack of labour, long distances from towns and lack of transport. Their farms were too small for them to make a living.

A

They faced crop failures and starvation. Many went to work as teachers, lawyers, builders, shoemakers, carpenters, and furniture makers in Grahamstown or Port Elizabeth.
