Chief Maqoma birth to death.
1798-1873
Who was Chief Maqoma?
He was one of the most famous Xhosa chiefs from the time of the frontier wars because he dared to resist the British.
1822
Maqoma founded his own kingdom on the banks of the Kat River, which the British had declared a neutral zone.
1829
After having raided the colony continually, he was expelled from his land.
1834
Maqoma was defeated by colonial soldiers.
1850
Maqoma grew determined to resist the British and lead a guerilla campaign against them in the forested mountains.
1858
He and his wife Katyi were arrested and imprisoned on Robben Island.
1869
The chief was released and went back to his land.
1871
Maqoma was found guilty of encouraging the Xhosa to resist the Britosh and sent back to Robben Island.
1873
He died on Robben Island under mysterious circumstances.
