Anxiety Flashcards
(13 cards)
What are the types of anxiety?
- cognitive
- somatic
- competitive trait
- competitive state
What is cognitive anxiety?
- mental symptoms of anxiety
- worrying
- irrational thoughts
- confusion
- learned helplessness
What is the link between cognitive anxiety and quality of performance?
As cognitive anxiety increases, quality of performance decreases
What is somatic anxiety?
- physiological symptoms of anxiety
- increased heart rate
- increased blood pressure
- increased sweat levels
- increased muscle tension
What is the link between somatic anxiety and quality of performance?
- as somatic anxiety increases, quality of performance also increases to a certain point
- inverted U thoery
What is competitive trait anxiety?
- performer becomes anxious in all sporting situations
- genetic predisposition
- stable and enduring
- high trait anxiety causes high state anxiety
What is competitive state anxiety?
- performer is only anxious in specific soprting situations
- often high pressure moments
- caused by negative past experiences
What are the causes of anxiety?
- task importance
- fear is failing
- being fouled
- precieved innacuracy of official decisions
- fear of injury / injury
- lack of self confidence
- audience effects
- evaluation apprehension
How can you measure anxiety?
- questionnaires
- observation
- physiological measures
What are the questionnaires used to measure anxiety and how do they work?
- Sports Competition Anxiety Test (SCAT) measures anxiety in sporting situations
- performers answer questions rating their level of anxiousness
- State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) distinguishes between state and trait anxiety
- performers score themselves 1-4 in 40 questionsbased on current feelings (state) and general feelings (trait)
- Competitive State Anxiety Inventory -2 (CSAI-2) measures cognitive and somatic anxiety and confidence in competitive situations
- performers rate themselves on a 4 point scale against 27 statements
What are the positives and negatives of questionnaires?
+ cheap
+ efficient
+ lots of information gathered in short period of time
- might not be answered truthfully
- may not understand question
- responses can be affected by environmental factors
How do observations work to measure anxiety and what are the issues with it and positives?
- performers behaviour is analysed before, during and after play
+ observations taken in real life scenarios
+ useful for coaches who know their team well - it is very subjective
- each observer recieves situations differently
- time consuming
- observer needs to be aware of performers normal anxiety levels
- performer will change behaviour when they realise they are being observed
How do physiological measures work to measure anxiety and what are the positives and negatives?
- generate factual data on somatic responses
- heart rate, blood pressure
+ measures can be taken immediately during performance
+ provides objective data
+ easy to make comparisons - monitors may restrict performers movements
- equipments is expensive
- performer realises they are being monitored
- innacurate readings
