What are the characteristics of an effective leader?
- effectve communication

What is a prescribed leader?
- chosen from outside the group
- taken on for new ideas or to learn new methods of training
- can cause initial disagreements and disruption
Eg/ NGBs appoint national team managers
What is an emergent leader?
- selected from within the existing group
- nominated by other group members
- already high level of respect
- have had same experiences as other team mambers, so might not be able to bring in new strategies

- autocratic / task oriented

What is an autocratic style of leadership?
- leader makes all the decisions and dictates instructions
- interested in ensuring the task is fulfilled

What is a democratic style of leadership?
- decisions are made by group consultation

What is Fiedler’s contingency model?
- suggests an interactionist approach in which an effective leader will match their style to the situation

- how favourable the situation is depends on the task, the leader, group relationship and the leaders position in authority
- the favourableness of the situation dictates which leadership style should be adopted
