What is Asthma
An obstructive airway disease caused by spasms and inflammation of the bronchioles
S/S of asthma

Anti-inflammatory
Corticosteroids bronchodilators leukotriene modifiers and metered dose inhalers
Which should the nurse give first for treatment of asthma
Bronchodilator - opens airway
What are leukotriene modifiers
Drugs used to block the chemical leukotriene, which reduces inflammation
Clinical Priorities - Asthma
Teach to control the the environment - Avoid triggers, inflammatory factors, irritants and pollutants
NCLEX teaching steps for metered dose inhaler 1 - 6
1 Remove the cap
2 Shake the inhaler well before use
3 breath out, away from the inhaler
4 Place inhaler in mouth between the teeth and close mouth around it
5 start to breathe in SLOWLY, press the inhaler and keep breathing slowly until one has taken a full breath (five seconds)
6 - Remove the inhaler and hold breath for 10 seconds, then breathe out
*Encourage use of spacers, wait one to two minutes in between each puff, rinse mouth after to avoid thrush.
