what are the signs of cataracts
Milky or white lens, painless blurry vision
How are cataracts treated
No treatment required until the vision is severely impaired
What is done during surgery
Cataracts are removed and new lens implemented
After surgery will vision be fixed
Only if new lens is placed. If no new lends - still need glasses/contacts
Main concern after surgery
Check for hemorrhage of the eye. Nurse should place the client in semi-fowlers position
What do you tell clients to avoid after surgery
Coughing, sneezing, bending over, straining, rubbing eye, crying. No lifting 5lbs
How should client sleep?
Sleep on the unaffected side. If both eyes, sleep elevated on back. Use eye shield to protect eyes.
Before cataract surgery
Hold anticoagulants
put in dilating drops
After surgery cataracts
Steroid eye drops
