Clinical Presentation Anorexia
- Behavioral issue - must have therapy, nutritional rehab and psychotherapy
- risk for refeeding syndrome - occurs due to fluid and electrolyte shifts during nutritional rehab of malnourished clients
- Doesn’t respond well to pharmacotherapy but does to cognitive
- confused with bulimia
Bulimia - Cycle of eating
Eating followed by purging
Bulimia - Will you lose weight
No - usually remain the same weight
Bulimia - Besides purging what other methods are used to lose weight?
Vomiting, enemas, drugs, diuretics, diets, laxatives
What are the medical complications associated with bulimia nervosa
Tooth decay, electrolyte, imbalances, ulcers, cardiac arrhytmias
Safety is a priority with bulimia because of
suicidal thoughts
Bulimia treatment goals
Encourage in talking, safety as watch for suicidal potential, and establish diet plan
Therapy Bulimia
Usually comes with depression, CBT is most effective therapy
Meds used are SSRIs
